We are BIG fans of our Teacher/Coach of the Month for March 2013 – Debra Downs!  Debra teaches two styles of yoga in NYC and offers tons of incredible workshops – she challenges your mind, body and soul! If you have the opportunity to check out this sparkly awesome teacher in one of her yoga classes or many upcoming workshops, a Physique 57 yin class or through a private session with her – we highly recommend it. You will be a better person (mentally and physically) for having spent time in one of her classes.

Debra trained to be a psychotherapist at University of Southern California where she received her Masters in Social Work and Psychology degree in 1991.  She worked with a variety of client populations before moving to New York City.  She trained to be a Life Coach at New York University and received her coaching certification in 2006.  She began her yoga practice in 1998 and was certified to teach yoga in 2007 from Yoga Union in New York City; she received her advanced certification in 2013 from the Insight Yoga Institute. 

Debra is the creator of “The Messy Life,” a personal essay blog that deals with parenting, health, relationship and intimacy issues. She lives with her husband and two children in New York City and Lakeville, CT.

Debra offers two styles of yoga:

(1) An active yoga class that focuses on the form and function of your body.  This involves heating up your major joints, getting rid of physical habits that misalign your structure and realigning your body so it works well so you can move and feel better.

(2) Yin Yoga, where you hold the floor postures up to 5 minutes targeting the dense connective tissue of the hips, pelvis and spine.  This style works out your joints, improves the health of your organs and teaches you how to steady your mind with meditation techniques.

What to Expect in Debra’s class…

Listening to you –  What do you need to do to heal and strengthen your body and mind so that you feel engaged, healthy and strong?  Once you begin to hear yourself, you’ll know and Debra will simply be your guide, your muse.  She doesn’t teach cookie cutter classes.  A 50-year-old injured woman does not have the same physical and emotional needs as a 20-year-old athlete.

Heal the body first, then strengthen it –  Debra works from the ground up and teaches you how to fold and unfold your body, like origami, so your major joints get warm and your muscles and organs work better. Here, you will strengthen your legs, open your hips, elongate your spine, release your shoulders and increase the capacity of your lungs.  There is no pain in space and that’s what you experience when you begin to open up your body and breathe better.

Practical tools that you can use in everyday life to be balanced, stronger and more grounded – You won’t hear a lot of Sanskrit in her classes. You will hear about breaking down a moment, ways you can calm your nervous system, how to become more aware of your self-talk and bring attention to the physical and emotional patterns that keep you stuck.

In Debra’s class, you will explore all aspects of your body and mind and be encouraged, supported and challenged.
